Ngari (མངའ་རིས་ས་ཁུལ།)

“If there’s no Ngari, there’s no Tíbet (无阿里, 不西藏)”. This saying clearly shows the importance of Ngari in Tibet, where mountains and sacred lakes are very abundant and have great importance in Buddhism. Taking a drone with you, you will capture the best images of Lake Manasarovar and Tholing Monastery, catching the best moments of the sunset and the clear water of the Heart-shaped “Lake”. If you are adventurous and daring, take a "tour" around Kangrinboqe Mountain or visit Tsaparang, where it is said that you will find human corpses. And if you want to relax on the banks of the rivers, Gunggyu Tso and La´nga Co are the best options to sit and look at the joint landscape of the water and the mountains.

How to get +

By plane: Ngari has its own airport, called Gnami Gunsa (阿里昆莎机场). There are flights from basically all parts of China, but almost always with a stopover at Lhasa Gonggar airport, in the capital of Tibet.

By car or tourist bus: tourists will be accompanied by a tour guide belonging to a travel agency in Tibet, since free movement is not allowed in case visitors are foreign. In case they are Chinese travelers, then it is recommended to rent a car with driver to move around the surroundings, since the roads are rocky, public transport is almost non-existent and there are uninhabited areas, just to avoid losses and any eminent danger .

Travel tips +

You must obtain a Border Permit, since Shigatse is on the border with Nepal and India. This document can be obtained at the place of residence and membership (户口) or in Lhasa (by hiring a local travel agency). In no way can it be gotten by the tourist him/herself in Tibet.

Also, you must have a travel permit for Tibet in the case that you are a visitor of non-Chinese nationality, which only those local travel agencies in Tibet with a certificate for foreign tourism have the capacity to issue.

In case of being a foreigner, it is mandatory to travel accompanied by a group guided by a tour guide from the travel agency, since it is not allowed to circulate freely in Tibet.

What to carry:

Ngari is a very dry place, so it is very important to hydrate well and bring skin creams.

Take pills for dizziness, for the urge of vomiting and to combat high altitudes.

Due to the altitude, do not forget to carry oxygen bottles in case you need them. Also, it is better to have snacks for the the trip in case a lot of energy is spent, such as raisins, chocolate, energy bars… partly also to fight against a possible reaction to altitude.

It is recommended to go in summer, since the temperatures in the area range between 9ºC and 21ºC and the weather is perfectly temperate, without much cold or heat.

Gastronomy +

Chaang liquor (青稞酒): it is a type of wine made with barley from the Tibetan plateau, with a type of raw material typical of Qinghai-Tibet. It has a yellow-orange color, a good sweet and sour taste, and is low in alcohol. It is used to celebrate parties, receive family and friends, at weddings, etc.

Tibetan noodles (藏面): plateau noodles have a different flavor than what we normally eat in plains areas. For those who are trying this for the first time, it may feel that the taste inside is raw, but actually that is one of its characteristics. It is made with wheat flour and is eaten both as a main and as a snack.

Tsampa (糌粑): for Tibetans, tsampa is the transcription of noodles, but with a shorter and thicker shape. It is a typical and main dish they eat every day, usually mixed with butter tea (酥油茶). In addition, sugar and Chhaang (青稞) are usually added to increase the flavor and make it yummier.

Dried Yak Meat (风干耗牛肉): Yak is a local species that feeds on many medicinal plants in high altitude areas. For the locals, the meat of this species is much more delicious and tender than that of others, and it can be braised, stewed or cooled to dry later, as it is in this case. In addition, almost all parts of their body are used for different functions such as creating clothing or instruments.
